Membership
The CPD is a voluntary organization funded by its members and the SUNY system. Each year the CPD conducts, hosts, facilitates or supports hundreds of classes, meetings and conferences for its member campuses. Membership in the CPD is campus-based and entitles all faculty and staff from a given campus to the benefits of membership for those events.
An annual membership fee is based on the number of faculty and staff (including part-time and full-time) at the institution. Annual membership fees range from $1,500 to $5,000. Your membership is flexible based on your campus needs and can include both general CPD training points and a Technical Program membership. Download the SUNY CPD Membership Packet and read more about the specific options here.
While participation in CPD events is not limited to CPD member campuses, our members enjoy the following benefits:
- Training and professional development opportunities are available for faculty and staff in all areas of the CPD.
- Training Points: Seventy-five percent of the campus’ general membership fee is allocated to training points; while Sixty percent of the Training Program membership is returned to the campus via a bank of training points/dollars. Training points can be used to pay tuition, registration, and other fees associated with participation in programs and services offered by the CPD.
Training Points are Dollars: 1 Training Point = $1.00 Learn more about points
- Flexibility in Training: The CPD uses many delivery methods for its programs and services. Many of these methods are combined into a blended learning approach.
- Contracts & Discounts: Members receive discounted pricing for programs and services. Pricing is typically at “Member” and “Non-Member” rates.
The CPD aggressively seeks attractive pricing for training and professional development classes to help its members meet their needs as cost-effectively as possible. The CPD will assist members of the SUNY community by researching, locating and coordinating desired classes either for individual training or as dedicated group classes and in any delivery mode or location.
Terms of Membership: Membership in the CPD is activated for your campus upon receipt of a signed membership application form. Points are allocated upon activation of your campus membership.
Points expire at the end of the same fiscal year they were issued and cannot be carried over.
Membership renews and points are re-issued on July 1 and run through June 30. Membership remains active until a written request to withdraw is received. Any campus wishing to withdraw must give 12 months written notice.

SUNY’s SAIL Institute provides innovative leadership development opportunities as well as cutting edge research on leadership, academic innovation, and critical issues in higher education. Our programming and services, which is offered throughout the state, is open to all SUNY faculty and staff, and available to SUNY Center for Professional Development (CPD) members at the lowest cost and CPD points can be used as payment for SAIL programs.
Most SUNY campuses are already active CPD members, and a list of current campus points contacts is publicly available so you can work with your local contact to coordinate point spending. The Campus Points Contact is responsible for:
- Providing advice on future CPD Program Development
- Approving the usage of CPD Points
- Communicating PD Opportunity to campus
We are excited to share with the SAIL community that a new program allows CPD member campuses to purchase additional points and to designate additional “points managers.” If you are leading a campus department or team that would like to take advantage of SAIL programming and manage your own pool of points, now is the time to reach out to the CPD.
Purchase of additional CPD Points may be made at any time, however please note that CPD Points expire at the end of each fiscal year (June 30). To allow campuses to plan for SAIL Leadership Development opportunities, CPD is offering campuses the ability to add additional points to the campus Annual CPD membership now or in the next fiscal year. You may purchase an additional pool of points now to use in this fiscal year, or plan to purchase an additional pool of CPD membership points after July 1 to be used next fiscal year which will be handled through the direct charges process.
This option to purchase additional points for SAIL programming is available with a minimum purchase of 1000 points. To purchase additional points for use now through the end of the current fiscal year (June 30, 2019), please complete the SUNY CPD Participating Institution Agreement. Again, additional points may also be added to your membership during the next fiscal year using the same form.
The SAIL Institute has an exciting and growing array of leadership development options available this semester and next year. To help inform your planning, I have included a schedule of upcoming events. We also work with campuses to provide customized leadership development opportunities onsite.
