SUNY Business Intelligence Advanced Analysis Training for IR, Finance and Other Professionals

Course Description

This half day training course is open to people who have attended the introductory SUNY BI training class and who wish to learn how to address issues they have encountered in developing BI queries. The class will include a short review and then launch into more advanced features, with an emphasis on combining multiple queries on one or more BI subject area. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sample ad hoc report to develop during the class. The session will use on accessing the SUNY System Administration Enrollment and Degree data, but the skills learned will apply to other data such as Finance.

This course consists of live instruction via Zoom and hands-on training from System Administration staff.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

JoAnna Brosnan

JoAnna Brosnan is an Associate for University Planning and Analysis in the Office of Institutional Research & Data Analytics at SUNY System Administration. Like many others in the field, JoAnna fell into Institutional Research (IR) “on accident” in 2014 in a shared-services position at two campuses and has enjoyed a sense of helping others in varying capacities through the broad and ever-expanding nature of IR work since. JoAnna spent more than 8 years working at campuses within the SUNY system, with 5 years’ experience as Director of Institutional Research and Effectiveness, before joining the System Administration office in 2022. For over a decade, she has enjoyed creating and collaboratively contributing to opportunities to share knowledge and skills related to “all things data”, ranging from Excel for Beginners workshops to FERPA and Data Governance policy development, implementation, and training, to conference sessions and larger scale system-wide sessions for varying audiences. She served on the AIRPO (Association for Institutional Research and Planning Officers) conference planning committee and represented the Technology Sector for multiple terms on the executive committee. JoAnna has an AAS in Social Sciences and a BS in Applied Psychology (Industrial/Organizational track) from SUNY Cobleskill, and an MA in Higher Education Administration from SUNY Stony Brook. In her free time, JoAnna is a volunteer firefighter, enjoys traveling both domestically and internationally, spending time with her dogs (Duck and Goose), and gaming.

Paul Wilner

Paul Wilner has over 10 years’ experience in using Oracle Business Intelligence (Oracle Analytics Server) and has taught a number of different analysis and statistical courses in a variety of settings, both in person and online. Paul has a passion for teaching and believes everyone can achieve a deep understanding of data and analytics. He also strives to be able to explain a technique or concept many different ways and remain patient until a student truly understands the material. His start in analytics dates all the way back to when he started keeping the statistical books for his local middle school Boys’ Basketball team in 8th grade. The technology and methods have changed a lot since then and Paul is always keeping up to date on the latest data analysis and visualization techniques. He currently works at SUNY System Administration in the Office of Institutional Research and Data Analytics, as an Associate for University Planning and Data Analytics. His areas of specialty include demography, geographic information systems, and enrollment.

Paul has a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology, a Masters of Education degree and a minor in Global Business, all from the Pennsylvania State University. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the University at Albany in Educational Policy and Leadership pending graduation in 2025. When not teaching OAS courses he enjoys cycling, golfing, craft breweries, and beaches.
