NYS Community College Leadership Academy
Overview
The NYS Community College Leadership Academy is a tailored program for community college leaders interested in advancing within their college and the field. This program is designed to provide mid-level community college leaders with a solid foundational understanding of critical student success and change management concepts.
The curriculum covers essential roles of leadership in student success, keeping students’ end goals in mind, the student experience, leadership traits that drive change, managing and advancing institutional change, and effective external partnerships and the leadership journey.
For the first two cohorts, New York was selected, along with Michigan and Texas, as part of a national scale-up project to replicate Ohio’s Leadership Academy for Student Success in partnership with the National Center for Inquiry and Improvement and the Aspen College Excellence Program with funding support from Ascendium Education Group, the ECMC Foundation, and The Kresge Foundation.

Cohort 1 Fellows & Presidents (June 2024)

Why Attend?
This program is based on the Aspen College Excellence Program curriculum which is focused on supporting community college leaders to lead from where they are, as well as gain skills needed to move into senior leadership positions.
Over the past two years, 67 Fellows from 25 community colleges have participated in the program. Of the Fellows from Cohort 1, ten have received promotions at their colleges, several have been identified to lead important strategic initiatives, and one Fellow credits her participation in the program with an idea resulting in a national federal grant.
A hallmark of the program is the diversity of the Fellows by their role in the college which fosters collaboration and cross-functional understanding.
“The leadership academy was a truly enriching experience. It not only enhanced my leadership skills but also provided me with the opportunity to interact with peers from all over the state.” – Cohort 1 Fellow
