AI for Learning Network (AI4LN)

SUNY OER Services within the Office of the SUNY Provost seeks proposals to explore online tools that specifically support AI learning models. AI is generally understood within the context of higher education as the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes areas such as natural language processing, machine learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

The AI 4 Learning Network, funded by SUNY OER Services and the Axim Collaborative, is a grant project aimed to enhance Generative AI training for faculty at tech and community colleges and HBCUs through collaboration among educational institutions. Collaborators include SUNY, Carnegie Mellon University’s Open Learning Initiative (OLI), California Community Colleges, and UNCF. This initiative provides Generative AI professional development for faculty, focusing on community colleges, technical colleges, and minority-serving institutions.

The project has the following core strategies and deliverables:

  1. Community of Practice. Faculty will engage in a community of practice to share knowledge and co-design instructional materials in understanding ethical and responsible AI use—including fundamentals, policies, bias, plagiarism, and prompt engineering—while co-designing aligned curriculum and learning objectives.
  2. Courseware Modules production. A series of Torus-ready Courseware Modules will be created to teach faculty how to design AI-aligned curriculum, assessments, rubrics, and inclusive instructional materials using basic-to-advanced prompt engineering and a variety of AI tools.
  3. Professional Development Credential. A digital Professional Development Credential will be developed and launched.
  4. Evaluation and improvement. Evaluation efforts will include improvements in course materials improvement, as well as understanding the impact of these efforts on students to inform planning and future steps to guide faculty in creating AI-enhanced assessments, integrity safeguards, AI literacy components, and rubrics—supported by custom rubric-driven chatbots.
  6. Materials created through the AI4LN program will be openly licensed using a CC-BY Attribution License.
